A Day on Kamala Beach, Phuket

15 minutes north of the bright lights and noise of Patong Beach lies Kamala Beach, a much more relaxed and laid-back beach experience. Kamala is a long stretch of beach surrounded by headlands and steep tree-covered hills beyond.

Kamala has the main road from Patong to the south, heading up to Surin heading through it. To the west of the main road are the tourist village and beach and to the east of the main road are more locals and long-term ex-pats. The main road itself is obviously the main road and so nothing special to see, with a few girl bars and shops.

The main village has a winding road with several restaurants, a couple of bars, and some shops. There are a disproportionate number of tailors here so expect to be pestered by them outside their shops.

The beach has several makeshift restaurants and bars along the beach which are cheap and cheerful and take advantage of the absolute beachfront setting.

The beach itself is not the most attractive on the island but is generally clean and safe. Waves can build in the wet season, but during the high season, the water is very calm and safe for families. Jet skis can be hired but beware of any damages as there is no insurance.

To the south end of the beach and along the winding headland road is 'millionaires row' which hosts some of Phuket's best luxury hotels and private villas. Andara, Paresa, and Cape Sienna are all luxury 5-star hotels and are great for drinks or dinner even if you are not staying there. Cape Sienna has a beautiful rooftop bar overlooking Kamala which is just perfect for sunset cocktails. Rockfish over the road do amazing food and their breakfast is cheap and gorgeous.
