Prang Ku

The Prang Ku you're interested in is most likely the Prang Ku Khmer Ruins located in Chaiyaphum province, Thailand. It's the most complete Khmer ruin in the province and a major point of pride for the capital city.

Here's some information about Prang Ku Chaiyaphum province:

  • History: Built in the reign of King Jayavarman VII (12th-13th century) in dedication to "Bhaisajyaguru" or the Medicine Buddha.
  • Style: Stone sanctuary with a plan characteristic to the Arogayasala or nursing home constructed during that period.
  • Structure: The main features include:
    • A central Prang (tower-sanctuary) in a 5-meter square shape with 12-recessed corners.
    • A Wihan or Bannalai (library) at its front, surrounded by a laterite wall.
    • A pond located outside the wall at the northeastern corner.
    • The main Prang has an entrance constructed as an antechamber, while the other 3 sides of the wall are false doors.
  • Condition: The laterite structure is quite well preserved and features some intricate carvings, though faded over time.
  • Significance: It's the city's main (essentially only) tourist attraction and even has a three-day festival dedicated to it.
  • Location: Situated about three kilometers from Chaiyaphum's central market, in the suburbs of the small city. There are houses and shops around the temple, but that doesn't detract from its historical significance.
