Phuthamonthon is a Buddhist park in Phuntthamonthon district, Nakhon Pathom province which is on the west of Bangkok. The first thing that you will see on entering Phutthamonthon is 15.8 meters tall Buddha image made from bronze gold which is considered to be the highest free-standing Buddha statue in the world.
The Buddha image was named Phra Si Sakaya Thosaphonlayan by King Bhumibol Adulyadej, His Majesty the King of Thailand. The Phutthamonthon Park was created in 1957. The park started construction on July 29, 1955, and the park was officially opened on Vaisakh Bucha day (May 13) in 1957.
The park covers an area of about 400 hectares which in traditional Thai units is 2500 rai, around the image of Buddha are four commemorative sites that pay homage and honor different stages in Lord Buddha’s life starting from His birth, enlightenment, preaching of the first sermon and finally achieving Nirvana. Phutthamonthon is the place where Thai Buddhism makes merit on every Buddhist Holy Day like offering food or dried food for monks or making a light waving rite. Feb 25’2013 is Makha Bucha Day; this day is celebrated as a Buddhist Holy Day for the veneration of Buddha and his teaching on the full moon day of the third lunar month.
Therefore there have a lot of Thai Buddhism come to make merit by will make a light waving rite around the tall Buddha image at night. There is a beautiful scene in that you will see many people holding candlelight, joss sticks with flowers, and walking around the Buddha image under the moonlight. It’s valuable for your time to visit and learn Thai life on a special occasion like a Buddhist Holy Day.
