Royal Barge Procession is held on 9 November 2012 organized by The Royal Thai Navy to commemorate the auspicious occasion of HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 85th birthday anniversary.
This Royal Barge procession is the objective of the King and Royal family going down the Chao Phraya to present offerings of the saffron robes to the monks during the Royal Krathin Ceremony after the Buddhist Lent in October at Wat Arun or well-known by the foreigner namely "The Temple of Down".
The water-borne royal procession arranges in five colum and consists of a flotilla of 52 barges: 51 historical Barges, and the 4 Royal
Barges are namely Suphannahong, Narai Song Suban, Anantanagaraj, and Anekchatbhuchong, eight barges with animal figureheads, and 40 smaller ceremonial barges. There are a total of 2,098 navy officers from the Royal Thai Navy will serve as oarsmen.
The Wasukri Royal Landing Place is the starting point of the procession down the Choa Phraya river, then passes the Grand Palace, Wat PO, and arrives at Wat Arun. During the processions, the oarsmen will keep in rhythm by beating of drums with accompanying music resounding along the Choa Phraya river.
The Thai Navy conducted 2 days of full dress rehearsals on 2 November 2012 and 6 November 2012 prior to the actual procession will be held on 9 November 2012 during 11.00 - 20.00 hrs.
