A Traditional Thai Masked Dance or Khon at Sala Chalermkrung Royal Theatre Bangkok


Thai Masked Dance or in the Thai language "Khon" is one of the Thai traditional performances that Thai people are proud to present to tourists. Khon has been performed since the Ayutthaya Period (1350-1767). Khon is a traditional Thai masked dance that combines gracefulness with masculinity in its dancing and singing with the elaborate dress. 

Mostly Khon performs an episode of an Indian epic Ramayana or Thai name " Ramakien" The performers wore the mask while they play Khon, all performers speak, sing, and dance with the reciters and singers who are sitting on one of the stage parts in Thai orchestra. 

Normally the Khon roles are male human, female human, demon, and monkey. The no of performers depends on the episode of Ramakien's performance. The Ramakien epic has approximately 54 episodes.
